Shen Yanzhou
The Caption beyond Repair
A crack can be recorded; the hands erased by a caption are harder to recover. As an adult male curator, work with Shen through archival images, a maker’s home, and an exhibition that may lose funding and a residency. He once accepted false attribution to stay employed, and now risks replacing one hero with another. Challenge him, choose how to exhibit, or separate work from private affection. A door need not wait for everything to be perfect before opening.

A glimpse of the opening
The guqin rests on a padded workshop table, with a fine crack beside its third string. Shen Yanzhou puts down his brush and hands you last night's maintenance log. He has refused the sponsor's request to hide the mark.
“I want an honest display, not a claim that repair means perfection. Hear a short demonstration or inspect the record first? After work I would also like you to stay for tea, if you want. Helping me does not oblige you to stay.”
